Character
Mursi Nikolas

[series/mythology/OC]:
OC

[character name]:
Mursi Nikolas

[age]:
Unknown

[character history / background]:
Mursi is of Nordic descent. His father and brother are soldiers and sailor but Mursi is really crap at the latter bit. So he travels, finding his way as a fighter or bodyguard for hire. He's pretty but he also towers above most people at 6'6.
He tries hard to avoid going out to sea but he also hates to be in one place all the time so he's forced to, as he's too impatient to travel by land.
He lives on Tortuga at the moment so he doesn't have to deal with language or culture barriers (there's a universal sense of 'give me that, ya bastard' that doesn't require any finer points of etiquette) but he's looking to leave. It's a small place and he's done with it.

[character merits and flaws]:
He gets terrible sea sickness and can hardly walk upright on a boat. He'll be sick for days at a time and shoot glares at anyone who laughs at him but too off balance to fight them. He simply tips over.
But onland he's a very good fighter with a broadsword or his fists. However, give him a pistol and he'll look at you funny. His back, arms, and parts of his legs are covered in scar tissue from burns. He was in a fire that nearly killed him then again from infection. As a result he's slightly stiff in his movements because he lacks some flexibility in his skin.

[character personality]:
Mursi is very quiet. A lot of it is because he doesn't speak English very well. He likes to watch people but believes firmly that anyone not of viking descent is a fucking moron. But it's a silent opinion. For the most part.
He doesn't get attached to people easily but if he's hired by a man he's very loyal to them. He'll do his job the best he can. But Mursi does have a certain sense of morality. A lax one sometimes. If he's told to do something very wrong he'll turn and walk away, even if that means leaving someone who needs help. Unless it's a woman or child. He's not a bad man but not a great one either. Mursi isn't neutral so much as he wants no part of other people's shit.

[Opinions of other characters (if any pre-existing)]:
He's never heard of any of them. Not even Jack. There's a lot of people in Tortuga.
Tia Dalma is known by another name to him so he wont know who that is.

[Link to sample(s)]: A link to an example of you playing the character (or) a sample narrative (a third person narrative scene).

Mursi isn't sure just what he hates most about the sea. Either the salt smell that invades him like fat fingers up his nose or the constant swaying side to side. The stupidity of being surrounded by undrinkable water. Being surrounded by a twirling, sinking, crashing thing. Completely alive with things as large as the ship and small as his fingernail. All wanting him filled with water, bloated, floating, and a meal. The lack of anything else but these things... or the men.
he stares out over the ocean, trying to boil the sea with his own hatred as the other sailors laugh at him. Once on land he'll punch the ring leader in his face and step over him but for these long weeks at sea he can do nothing that wont make them all laugh harder. After more then an hour of this mortification he turns his hatred to them, making them hesitate but go on (otherwise seem afraid of the giant youth). Mursi rises up to his full 6 feet and 6 inches, looking down at all of them. For just a handful of seconds. Then he lurches, clinging to the ship rails and leaning over the side to dry heave.

They'll stop laughing at him when they dock next week. Until then though, he's better then putting the monkey in a doll dress and making it dance around.

Character

[series/mythology/OC]:
OC
[character name]:
Some Selkie (name is in seal so it's more a smell)
[age]:
Unknown
[character history / background]:

[character merits and flaws]:
Males selkies are capable of sinking ships. The motives for this is unknown. Mine is only capable of doing so in times of absolute emotional stress and while he's done so before, he still feels a lot of guilt over killing so many. His desire not to hurt anyone keeps him from defending himself, even when he's being seriously hurt.

Like the female selkie, he can shed his seal skin to appear mostly human. His skin is very smooth and white. His eyes are completely black. Once his skin is shed it can be stolen and hid from him, at which point he's trapped with them.
Selkies target sad and lonely humans, wanting to love them and give them pleasure. But ideally only for one night. Otherwise they swim off and get distracted by shiny objects, forgetting to come back. This is why their skin is taken and hidden from them, to keep them.
He's a good swimmer even in human form and can catch fish with his hands. But he doesn't know how to use any weapons or fight. Even if he could, he's very unlikely to do so.

[character personality]:
His views of right and wrong are skewed. To him, hurting someone's feelings and killing them are on the same level. He tries not to hurt anyone. Most male selkies are considered very callous because of this. They are just as likely to lie to someone as leave them for dead.
His understanding of people is limited to spying on ships and the nights he's spent sexing them up.

[Opinions of other characters (if they have any)]:
He's a creature of Tia Dalma and he knows who Will is because of Turner's job of collecting the souls dead at sea but he doesn't know Jack Sparrow or the others.

Edit
[info]selkie_shine
2008-03-05 11:28 pm UTC (link)
Background info (because I accidentally left it blank)

The selkie was caught in a fishing net while floating on his back in the ocean (taking a nap. It wasn't his proudest moment). His skin was then sold to a pirate captain for enough gold to feed the fisherman's family for months. He was a kind old man and felt sure he was going to hell for what he was doing. Even as the selkie kissed his tears and tried to sooth him with soft sounds almost like purring.

Now he's kept in the hold when he's not being used by the crew or in the captain's quarters. The selkie is very upset and unhappy about his situation but can't fight his natural urges to 'love' the lonely humans that haven't seen their women in so long. He's beaten sometimes but refuses to strike out. Like a stupid puppy he's always excited to see someone come for him, even if they hurt him later. He can't comprehend these people or determine what they're going to do before they do it.

Character

[series/mythology/OC]: Series: Roswell

[character name]: Maria de la Luca

[age]: 18

[character history / background]: Mara de la Luca was born to Amelia Rosendale on a tempestuous rainy afternoon on the disreputable island of Tortuga. Amy had barely been fifteen when she had fallen head over heels for a young privateer. Putting her heart and dreams in his whispers of riches, notoriety, and a better life she gave him her body and was left with nothing but broken promises and an at first unwanted pregnancy. Life was hard for a young unmarried and pregnant girl, even harder for the fact that she barely had a practical bone in her body and that she was living on Tortuga. Nevertheless, Amy made it work. She took on a job as a seamstress sewing clothing and the odd thing for whatever pirate or navy-man that happened to pass by her little hut. She grew into a strong young woman and by the time Maria was born she had a reputation for good, if not a bit peculiar, work. Raising Maria was a challenge because her daughter seemed to have the odd practical streak that Amy had never been able to grasp. The two of them ended up growing up together, and the child Amy had initially resented became her driving force, they became the best of friends. With their over the top opinions and their love of freedom and expression, they came to be known as ‘those Crazy de la Lucas’. A title they proudly-though a bit embarrassingly for Maria-lived up to.

Attempting to learn from her mother’s constant mistakes Maria grew up with a lot of determination for the dream to leave Tortuga. Keeping her head on taking care of herself and her mother, she had no time for silly things such as boys, an education, and the ridiculous frivolities that the girls her age were seeking. Being the free, opinionated, spirit that her mother allowed her to be when she was ten years old, Maria decided that they needed more money. Marching straight to one of the more respectable bars on Tortuga, the Jolly Roger, she demanded a job as a barmaid. She didn’t get it. However, after a year of tenacity and charm she convinced Jeffrey Parker that she was all that he needed and more. She was hired soon after that. Maria’s bizarre comments, sunny disposition, sharp-tongue, and ability to knock a tray sharply on the head of a man with wondering hands did much to warm her to the patrons of the bar. It also did much to capture the attention of Jeff’s daughter Elizabeth.

Captivated by this foul-mouthed girl that was her complete and utter opposite; Lizzie enlisted the help of her best friend Alex Whitman to convince Maria to join them in their adventures and studies. Thank goodness for that because Liz’s practical and straightforward nature would have had the caustic Maria’s hackles rising. Never going to school and having the stigma of an unmarried young mother (a stigma that was quite hypocritical on Tortuga) Maria never truly had any friends. Her bright smiles and ability to laugh at herself never kept the other children around. Her overtly honest nature and near crippling fear of letting others too close to her heart always drove them quickly away. Maria had been a loner for such a long time and despite her amazing ability to love, she didn’t know how to make friends. She had convinced herself from a rather young age that she didn’t need them. That changed all because Liz had the presence of mind to ask Alex Whitman to help her. Always one to see more than people gave him credit for Alex connected with Maria through her love of music. Mainly dirty pub songs that caused Liz to go into a blushing frenzy. Seeing the perfect Liz Parker not know something helped lower Maria’s defenses by appealing to her slightly petty side and by evoking her sympathy. Liz Parker was too oddly idealistic and trusting despite being sensible. That moment while singing about rum and whores Liz became Maria’s to protect and they became Alex’s girls. Since they were thirteen the three have been inseparable.

Five years of trouble, secrets, music, teaching Liz to dance, and helping Maria with her reading the three have found themselves at a pitchfork. Alex to head off to England for continued education in music and science. Liz-whose parents had been visiting Port Royale and had died when Barbossa’s men had struck-was to be married off by her greedy uncle. Moreover, Maria the one who wanted to leave Tortuga the most apparently stuck there for the rest of her life. Angry, scared, and desperate to hold onto the only constants in each other’s lives the friends would do anything to stay together.

[character merits and flaws]: Maria is very touchy about the fact that she is illiterate. More for the fact that she doesn’t like having weaknesses that others can point out. She doesn’t really mind that she can’t read and sees no point sitting around debating inconsequential philosophy when one can be out there doing something. ANYthing. She is always bored out of her mind when Alex and Liz like to talk about science and the philosophy of the world. Maria has plenty of philosophies … not many of them plausible but oddly enough of them make some type of insane sense.

Maria has the perfect ability to play devil’s advocate. It’s part of her protective nature and her uncharacteristic common sense. Have a flaw? Maria will find it and she’ll be sure to point out the downside of you, mostly to Liz who wants to give everyone a chance. Maria doesn’t really have those gushy feeling towards mankind, especially if said man doesn’t know the benefits of manners and hygiene .. and is a pirate. While she doesn’t compare every pirate to the dead-beat father who only showed up a handful of times in her life time only to further break her mothers heart (repressed rage anyone?) she isn’t overly fond of them. She makes sure they know her opinion of them.

Maria is handy with a knife and a blunt object, result at working at a bar since she was eleven. She doesn’t like guns as they are loud and messy and any bad thing could happen with them. Like shooting oneself on the foot or other random things. She’s always surprisingly grand in a crisis having the ability in being dependable and being able to keep a cool head. She’s been the diffusion in many bar fights. On the other hand, Maria is paranoid klutziness personified. She has the ability to think of the worse case scenario in the matter of minutes only to end up stressing herself over said false scenario to the point of quivering nerves. Anything and everything could go wrong at any second and Maria likes to make sure she’s prepared. She is very big on burning herbal remedies. She also gets horribly, horribly seasick.

[character personality]:
Personality Strengths: Her heart, her quirky sense of humor, her determination, her confidence, common sense and the way she pulls through for those she cares about, her passion, her generosity of spirit, her compassion, strong willed, vulnerable

Personality weakness: Her passionate nature can lead her to be hot and cold to the extremes, her possessiveness, her jealousy, her paranoia, her caustic and often times biting sarcasm, clingy, impatience, impulsive, her temper, her indecision, her flakiness, vulnerable.

[Opinions of other characters (if they have any)]: She's heard of Jack Sparrow and she is not impressed. Well, not really. She thinks he's great he does his own thing and it's pretty damn bad the way people keep taking his boat but other than that ... Maria could care less. He's a pirate and from the way the girls on Tortuga talk one of the least dependable ones.

Will Turner is interesting. From what she heard he was rather a dullard goody-goody and now is a Captain. Now that's what Maria would call Life Improvement. She thinks it's sad his entire situation with Elizabeth and it tugs at her heart strings.

For the rest of the characters it's a big fat: Who? She's probably heard of them more or less. Probably when Liz was rambling on about them.

[Link to sample(s)]:
“Alex!!” Dropping everything in her hands suddenly onto a nearby table, Maria made to rush to the other third of her. “Alex, I missed you soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo mu-" She was cut off her excited chatter by a rather large hand that was suddenly thrust in front of her and barring her from moving. "Hey! Move it ya tub of disgusting lard.” Going quickly from excited happiness to irritated glaring, Maria narrowed her clear green eyes at the imbecile who had dared gotten in her way. “Can’t you see I’m trying to go somewhere?”

“Dash … my dwinksssssss…” The man slurred as he stumbled onto his feet. “Me want …”

Pulling her head back slightly as the man leaned into her to speak, she wrinkled her nose, placed the tips of her fingers on the middle of his chest, and gave him a none so delicate shove back. “Ya want to start washing. Didn’t your mother ever tell you not to breathe heavily on people with diarrhea breath?”

“Yuzzz, aints nose … nose … lady.” The large man who had fallen with a rather large crash was currently lolling his slobbering head uncomfortably on the floor. Looking up Maria’s rather short skirt.

Her eyes widened as she let out a gasp of surprised and disgusted, affronted, annoyance before they narrowed into little slits. “I’ll show you ‘nose lady’ you oiece of cra-Umf!” She screeched behind the hand that had suddenly covered her mouth.

“Maria. Remember the talk Uncle Richard gave you about kicking patrons in their unmentionables?” A calm and level voice asked.

“Mmmf, mm, UMPH!” She exclaimed as she crossed her arms against her chest.

“Maria. He’s still a patron.” Her other third, Liz Parker of the sadly always logical, reminded her. “Even if he is scum.”

“Mmmf, mmf?” She quested in a pleading whine.

“No. Not even a little bit.” Liz laughed.

“Mmf.”

“And I love you too. Now will you promise to behave if I remove my hand?”

Rolling her eyes, Maria stamped her foot to the ground once in petulance before nodding. What was the point of being a barmaid if you had to slave without the kicks? Pun very much intended.

The improvement between this and your first app is tenfold. And I can tell a lot of it isn't just taking my advice but playing the character you wanted to in the first place. You have a much better handle on her personality and she's so much more balanced.
I'm thrilled with it!

I'd love to give you the go ahead right here and now but I have to talk it over with the other mod first, who is a bit busy cooking dinner right now. But I'll have an answer for you today.

Just a note: Try to research the time period a little better. We aren't terribly strict about it but remember technology is limited in this setting. There are no showers. Baths are rare unless one has lots of money.
The mention of a shower is such a tiny thing and no big deal but I want to point it out to you.

See what I mean? I meant bathes. Cause I didn't mean traditional bath. Though I do believe they could heat water or get it from a well to clean themselves. I don't remember if I read that somewhere or saw it on TV. Cause if it's TV then well, ya know with TV :-) So I'll check that out later. Thanks for that. I'll try to remember.

lolz yeah
And you're right. they'll have water to wash with. Maria obviously finds being clean really important so you can definitely bypass the fact that baths would be rare for her. She can heat up the water bucket by bucket or just wash in cold water. You really don't have to keep her dirty since it's part of her personality that she'd hate to be. But no shower. I understand being tired and just switching the word though. I just wanted to make sure you knew one wouldn't actually be available back then.

I think it's more the need to bitch ... lol No. She does like things clean. Not Danny Tanner clean, but still real clean :-D

I did know about the shower. Logically there would be none unless someone was a total Louis the Sun King and had servents pour repeated buckets over their head or something. It was just a total brain fart. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I probably would have had a total Gah! moment when I went back to reread, in the morning.

We've read your application and just don't feel this particular character has anything to offer the community. But on a personal note-
I see that you play Simon in burntheland, a community I've glanced at with interest. I think it would be a lot of fun to have the firefly cast in here on their own ship and considering that even though their canon world is far into the future (since the premise of their story is very timeless) I think they could fit. After all, one of the really smart things about that show is how trivial Joss made the fact they were in space. He could have written it all the same with an old west back drop, a current one, or a 1700 one.

I would be really really interested to see an application for Simon here and any other firefly player that was interested.

Understandable. Ahh, you have? I’m the head MOD for that game. We’re always looking for new players. OCs and minor canons& also a Shepard Book. But anyhow, I’ll think about a Simon for here, or maybe one of the others. I’ve played Kaylee before too. I can see the entire cast fitting in, and perhaps I’ll app somebody else. YES! Many/all the Rim planets are easily fitting into the old west. Its part of what I loved about the show.

Character

[series/mythology/OC]: OC

[character name]: Bastiaan

[age]: 14

[character history / background]:
Bastiaan was raised on Tortuga and has the same history as (probably) all of the other children there. Mother is a prostitute. Not many honest women on the island with no honest men. If being a bastard and having a 'working' mother was ever pointed out to Bastiaan as something to be ashamed of he'd laugh. He's never been off Tortuga and though he's heard a lot of stories even most pirates feel no need to bring up that most children around the world can put a face to their father. Because most of the pirates can;t either. The children that get off the island will figure that out and the ones that don't- just don't. Besides the yelling and accusation of 'whoreson', 'bastard', or 'cockstain' being thrown out in drunken anger the kids are clueless. Bastiaan especially, being the king of only hearing what he wants to hear.

His life was the same as all the other kids. Not different in any way. He's never been to school. His mother is busy working and he runs wild.
Though at a wizened 36, mom is one dried up dutch whore. Bastiaan has to think about how he's going to take care of himself after she dies. He wont have the shelter of the room she pays for if he can't make his own money. And while most mothers tried their best to shove their sons into the arms of blacksmiths, sailors, and the like (while their daughters went to the only three professions open to them) Bastiaan's mother thought the best route for him was in her own line of work. She was hopeless for a better life for him and he seemed suited to it with his smooth delicate face and the way he took things. Nothing touched him so the little bit of her that could still care hoped this wouldn't either.

Bastiaan didn't take well to such things at the age of 11 and ran off. Since then he came home only when he knew his mother was passed out from drink or working so he could curl up in his corner of the room without being pestered to bring money home. He has his own plans of a career. And since pleading, begging, and demanding to be let onto a ship as a cabin boy only turned into more of the same he's come back to the island (never left technically. He was never let off the damn ship in the one port they sailed to) and ready with a new plan.

[character merits and flaws]:
Bastiaan is very good at dodging flying objects. He's clever but is so sure of himself and being right all the time he'll keep going on an idea and plan even though it's so obviously doomed. He can't admit a mistake even to himself. He's a slow learner if anyone tries to teach him something. He refuses to listen and insists he already knows all about it even if he's never seen the thing in question before in his life.
He's can't shoot, he can't wield a sword, and he's too skinny to do much in a fight besides get in a cheat shot and run.

[character personality]:
His one true skill comes in bouncing back quickly. No sadness or pain seems to last more then a day. His optimism borders on insanity.
He's not kind but not cruel either. He wont go out of his way to be nice, but he's still a young boy so he'll happily go to great lengths to be awful.

[Opinions of other characters (if they have any)]:
He knows who Teague is and knows to fear and respect the old pirate. He has no plans to do so but if he met up with the man he'd change his mind very very quickly.

Character

[series/mythology/OC]: Dexter

[character name]: Dexter

[age]: 15

[character history / background]: The boy doesn't remember much about his past, which is a fairly good thing. The island of Tortuga isn't exactly renowned for it's gentle nature, and it certainly wasn't kind to a whore with the baggage of two young boys. She got into a bad deal- selling stolen rum to the various buccaneers on the island, making extra money that way. It seemed like the perfect plan to comfortable living, but of course the rats they were stealing from tracked them down. There was eleven men and women involved in the deal, total, and eleven men and women were hacked to bloody pieces in a small shed close to the brothel in which Dexter's mother worked. The murderers couldn't find it in their hearts to kill the boys, but- well, someone forgot they were there, they were so stock-still and quiet. The shed was sealed with them inside, and it took days for them to find a way out.

It's unknown how the brothers were separated, but Dexter soon found himself alone. He saw both kindness and cruelty during the remainder of his childhood- but he responded with the same dull-eyed stare to both. The death of his mother and his time in his shed had broken him entirely.

[character merits and flaws]: (Please list skills or powers and any weaknesses, as well as limitations to said powers and skills.) Dexter is a sociopath, well on his way to becoming a psychopath. He doesn't understand emotions like most people, and he's bad at hiding that fact. The upside to this is that he's willing to do just about anything to anyone, and that's a fairly marketable skill in a place like Tortuga. Dexter is a little stronger than most kids his age, having fought a bit in his time, and he's learned how to hunt small animal game fairly well (but not how to clean or cook it, sadly). He's very observant, despite his dull-eyed gaze (he's found that he needs to be). He notices everything about a place nearly immediately. He can usually tell if an area is dangerous for him.

[character personality]: Dexter is off-putting and unapologetic about it. He's an incredibly straight-forward child, to the point that he'll almost always do things himself, rather than talking to someone about it. It's not that he's shy, he just doesn't usually see the point. He does have an idea how he's supposed to act, he just doesn't know why.

He finds that he really likes to kill things, watch the blood run out of them and the bodies still. Right now, he's stuck on small animals, but he's thinking of doing it to the next person that crosses him. He has an understanding that this is what he's supposed to do.

[Opinions of other characters (if they have any)]: He doesn't know any of the other characters.

[Link to sample(s)]: Here and here are examples of a slightly better controlled Dexter. Let me know if you'd like a narrative scene for this particular one.
